Recommendations
Diet is extremely important during the first months of a dog's life, ensuring that the puppy
receives all the essential nutrients for healthy growth.
From birth, the puppy's primary source of food is its mother's milk (under normal conditions).
Preparation for weaning should begin between six and eight weeks of age. At this time, introduce
solid food by adding a little warm water to Spike Junior to soften it and form a
porridge. This eases the transition from milk to solid food and supports digestion, as the
digestive system is not yet fully developed. Gradually reduce the amount of water until the food is
offered dry.
For Mothers
Mothers should begin eating Spike Junior in the last third of gestation, with a
gradual transition from their previous food and an increased daily amount until delivery.
Spike Junior provides the extra energy needed in late gestation and promotes good
digestion.
During lactation, mothers should continue eating Spike Junior, preferably
ad libitum, until 3–5 weeks of lactation (peak milk production). This free-feeding approach
helps meet variable energy requirements and ensures the mother uses energy from food rather than
body reserves, helping maintain a healthy body weight.
Feeding the same food to mothers and puppies also helps puppies accept Spike Junior
more easily during weaning.
Warning: If the mother dog is losing weight, she may not be getting enough energy.
Consult your veterinarian.
Important: Make sure your dog has regular access to clean, fresh water.
