What is Mud Fever?

Mud fever is one of the most recognisable skin conditions in horses — a collective name for various forms of skin irritation on the lower leg. In serious cases the entire lower leg can swell, and without treatment this may lead to persistent swelling and lameness.

Common symptoms include redness, scales, scabs and cracks in the pastern area. Bacteria and fungi thrive in the warm, damp environment of the pastern — particularly after contact with mud, dirt or from washing the pastern too frequently.

The constant movement of the pastern during exercise means healing takes a long time without targeted treatment.

1. If necessary, shave away the hair around the affected area.
2. Clean the pastern with a disinfecting shampoo (e.g. Cavalor Derma Wash).

5. Continue use long enough to prevent recurrence.
